Let’s Do 52! Generations

My grandparents are two of the most amazing people I’ve ever known. They are selfless and devoted, caring and compassionate, interesting and fun. They have wonderful stories, especially my grandfather who served this country both in the Army and the Air Force. You don’t meet people like them in our younger generations today.

My grandfather, for all his incredible qualities does tend to worry. A lot. I’m sure that’s where I get it from. He told me when I was a little girl that he was sorry he wouldn’t be alive to see me graduate from High School. It was alarming at the time, but over the years I heard it more and more. I just prayed he would be around to experience those milestones with me. And I was so happy to have him there at my High School graduation. And my college graduation. And when I graduated from grad school. But more than anything in this world, I am glad that he was wrong because more than anything in this world I want my own children to know him, to know both of them. And they do.

Andrew shares this rare and special bond with his great grandma and papa. After he was born, I started working again when he was around 4 months old and they watched him for the remainder of the school year. It was difficult, both physically and emotionally for them but they did it. They did it for me but mostly I’m quite certain they did it because they know how rare it is for great grandparents to get to know their great grandchildren. They were Andrew’s teachers and comforters. He learned and continues to learn from them. His eyes light up when he finds out we are going over for a visit.

I hoped the same would be true for Allison and it is. She studies them both carefully, not fearfully, to understand them. She watches their eyes and their mouths when they speak. She opens her arms wide to be held by them. The love between great grandparents and their great grandchildren is one of those rare and unexpected gifts. Someday they will understand how lucky they are. For today I’ll know it and I’ll hold on to that for me, and for them.

If you would like to be a part of my circle, let me know and I’ll add your link.
