What Do I Do All Day?

Funny you should ask...

Well, I'm a teacher. I teach at a very small Catholic school for students with moderate to severe learning disabilities. My students range in age from 10-13. I can't say that I've always wanted to be a teacher but after the first week in my job, I realized I always knew I would be a teacher. I can't imagine doing anything else.

By the way, I teach Language, Math, Social Studies, and Spelling.

FAQ about my job:

Q: Are your students mentally handicapped?

A: Absolutely not! My kids are normal preadolescents. They attend my school because the mainstream classroom environment did not meet their learning needs. Bottom line, you'd probably never be able to tell my kids apart from "normal" kids.

Q: Is it true you work with your mom?

A: Yes. My classroom actually shares a wall with hers! I love working there with her. Being the daughter of the librarian has its special privileges. I also think our history is neat! My mom was pregnant with me while teaching the same exact subject and grade that I am teaching now. I'm the first second-generation teacher at the school.

Q: Do you hit kids with rulers and pray all day?

A: No. Not that I haven't been tempted to on a few occasions. We say 3 short prayers a day: one in the morning, one before lunch, and one to end the day. Having attended public school all my life, it took some getting used to. I enjoy it though.

Q: Oh my gosh, kids? How can you stand being around them all day?

A: Two Words: June and July. No seriously, I used to be terrified of small children but I love my kids like they were my own. I look forward to seeing them every day. The worst day of teaching is better than the best day at any other job I've ever had. Having paid summers off doesn't hurt.
